N.B.A. Backs Referees as Inquiry Continues Friday, 31 August 2007||Foresight LAS VEGAS, Aug. 30 -- A federal investigation is ongoing, and an internal review has begun, but NBA Commissioner David Stern is not waiting for the results to defend the integrity of his league’s referees. It has been two weeks since the former NBA referee Tim Donaghy pleaded guilty to providing inside information to gamblers, and more than a month since Stern dismissed Donaghy as a ``rogue, isolated criminal.” Since then, there have been reports -- all based on anonymous sources -- that Donaghy would name other referees who might have broken NBA rules, if not necessarily the law, by gambling. While not dismissing that possibility, Stern -- in his first extended comments in more than a month -- expressed confidence Thursday that his 60-person officiating crew would withstand the scrutiny. The occasion, of course, was the second anniversary of the Katrina debacle. Predictably, Bush -- as he’s done in his 12 previous treks to the Gulf since Katrina -- publicly boasted that he’s done everything humanly possible to get the region back on its feet. He also insisted that much more still must be done and his administration will do it. Just as predictably, his would-be replacements Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and John Edwards just as publicly lambasted Bush’s efforts as hopelessly failed and flawed. And they insisted that there’s no reason to believe that he’ll improve on the anemic effort. Whiteness as Property, Michael Vick & the Jena 6 by Almuhtada Smith Friday, 31 August 2007||Almuhtada Smith The Harvard Law Review published Professor Cheryl Harris’s acclaimed article “Whiteness as Property” in 1993. In 2007, the piece remains relevant like early 90’s hip-hop. In “Whiteness as Property”, Professor Harris poses the hypothetical question, would it cost more for a person to go from non-white to white, or from white to non-white? Read more >> | Is Being Black The Same As Being Disabled? by Therí Pickens Thursday, 30 August 2007||Theri Pickens I'm always quite eager to learn from my undergraduate students; so,when I received thirteen papers suggesting that race was a social disability, I had to sit up and take notice. What did they mean that being Black – at least in the text we'd read – was akin to having a disability? How did they understand 'disability' to function? So listen up. If you take away nothing else from this piece, remember this: For women, size definitely matters. However, there’s good news for you brothers packing substandard equipment. Fortunately, keeping a woman satisfied has virtually nothing to do with the size of a man’s physical endowment; it has everything to do with the breadth of his ingenuity and thoughtfulness. And here’s the best part—the smaller the expressions of love, the better. Read more >> | I Wonder If He Dates Women…Too? by Yorri J. Berry Tuesday, 28 August 2007||Foresight As I walk through the library with one of my friends, I am sidetracked by this fine brother. He was slightly taller than 6’0, medium caramel complexion, smooth skin, athletic build, nicely groomed, and articulate speech...a true eye catcher. I didn’t look too hard though, partly because I was trying to get things in order for school, not to mention the lame line I would have had to come up with to get his attention…what was I going to say, “excuse me can you help me reach this book on the top shelf!” Then, in that moment, I asked myself a question I often think as I see men in passing…“I wonder if he dates women...too”? The Redskins were more fortunate with Jason Campbell only taking a bruised knee out of the injury he suffered. The Giants and Ravens combined for 6 injuries in their Sunday game and there were a host of other sprains, strains, tears, pulls and breaks during the first two weeks of preseason action.
